As a musician, what was it like for Clapton when he first started out in the business? Clapton became a member of the Yardbirds in 1963, when he was only eighteen years old. During this time period, Clapton became well-known among the bluesy rockers who were becoming increasingly popular. However, the young guitarist earned the nickname “Slowhand” from the audience, which began a slow handclap in anticipation of his arrival due to his propensity of postponing engagements to mend broken guitar strings before each performance.
