In 1984, Rupert Everett received a BAFTA for his debut performance as Julian Mitchell in Another Nation. In a 1930s English school, he portrayed an openly gay student. He was known for portraying bad boys, and his smoldering good looks helped him land roles in films in the 1980s and 1990s. With his song, Generation of Loneliness, Everett attempted (unsuccessfully) to transform his celebrity into a music career as a pop star. But it was too late; the audience still saw him as a fantastic performer, and fans ignored his artistic projects. In 1997, for My Best Friend’s Wedding, he received his second BAFTA and his first Golden Globe.

There’s nothing wrong with Rupert’s current appearance because he no longer resembles the fresh-faced kid who once graced the silver screen. He is, though, still behaving as frequently as he once did. He appeared in Tim Burton’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children this year and previously in the Shrek films and the Chronicles of Narnia. He’s also taken up fiction, having written two memoirs and a novel. He’s been vocal about various political and social topics, including decriminalizing prostitution and same-sex marriage. Clearly, there has always been more to this new Renaissance guy than what appears on the table.
