Beverly Hofstadter regarded her son, Leonard, as more of a mental canvas than as a human being, according to her. She humiliated Leonard on numerous occasions as a subject in her parenting experiments when he was a child. The two had a difficult time bonding; Leonard had spent his entire life attempting to gain her favor.
